A Visit to id Software, 1993

A Visit to id Software from john romero on Vimeo.

Joe Siegler IM’d me a couple weeks ago and said he found a VHS tape that had some DOOM footage on it before its release and if I didn’t want it he was gonna throw it out.

I said, “Send it to me immediately.”

So now I finally got it, ripped it to digital and then used iMovie to present it to anyone with an interest in DOOM history. Here’s what I wrote up about the video:

In 1993, Dan Linton, owner of a hugely successful BBS called Software Creations, visited Texas and made his way to id Software. This is the footage he recorded one night in November 1993. Shown are several of id’s employees at the time: Jay Wilbur, Shawn Green, John Romero, Dave Taylor, Sandy Petersen and Adrian Carmack. Bobby Prince was visiting to finish the music and create the sound effects. This video has 21 minutes of me playing DOOM before the sound effects were put in as well as some early deathmatching with Shawn Green.

Awsome! Its just incredible to see bits like this form the past; like a time machine of sorts. I always liked your fascination for the history of your life and gaming in general, its like you are you’re own curator or something happy

Say, one question: Are you taking care of the history bit on your latest effort? To me, since this all game dev scene is taking years to build a product out you might as well have still photographers and making ofs crew just like the movie industry!!

Are you doing that? because, I want that super-edition Blue-Ray signed by you, ok! hee hee

    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting the video John. I still think the story of Id would make a great film.

incredible piece of history, for us geeks anyway, what it must have been like actually living this exciting live of game develeper knowing you had a mega-hit like doom on your hands – so romantic, seems like a big family, not like a dev. studio, some of my best memories are doom related, thanks for sharing this with us John

  17. Hey John, great video, absolutely love it.

I’m always interested in Id Software’s history and absolutely loved the gaming industry back then. When making a technological breakthrough was a exciting awe-inspiring feat and big deal unlike today.

Please, if you have any more material, please email me links. I would also love to download this video. Would love to see some footage with John Carmack as well.

I still have the original DOOM box made of cardboard, containing four stiffies and the manual.

Cool men thats some action was this on the Next machine?.

  25. deamonslayer3001 says:

It’s a shame that there wasn’t more footage captured during that era of ID. Perhaps, if one looked closely, some of the original features in Doom could be restored using the Doom Builder program.

  26. Yoav says:

Doom is such a great game.

  27. 1PlayerD says:

You should give us an alpha or beta version of doom, that would be AWESOME! tongue
    But that’s only a dream.
