Post Fan site need help
on: January 25, 2010, 17:40

Hello!

I decided to make a site dedicated to games , where i putt up informatio and alot of pictures

NONE PROFIT ofcourse

I NEED YOUR HELP! you whoever you guys are please help me collect information

looking for :
- concept art
- pictures (rare or normal)
- information about developlent and general info
- NO RUMOURS, no fan art , no opinion. just real fact (I might eventually ad fan arts to the site but right now “we” need material to make the site factual)

this is going to be a very simple site w picture gallery , info for each game.

right now if people can help me collect info and related post it here or give me links so i can read .

right now i have made only 3 categories.. wolf 3d , doom 1 , doom 2

You decide if i make hte site because i need material , if i see there is not enough i will give it up and move to another project since i would lack inspiration to continue.

The site is going to be hopefully good enough to be in links page or something here or somewhere , its going to be hosted on my domain but there is no profit no gurantee no commercial on it..so its just a hoby , i hope this helps you understand your not going to loose aything

I might credit people on the site if they contribute

You *might* credit people? I would bloody hope you would, if you’re getting people to submit content to your site – for free – they at least deserve some recognition.

PS: Maybe you should set up a domain and a actual functional website before you ask for content. Wouldn’t want people’s hard work to go to waste on a website that hasn’t been created yet (Where’s the link!?)

i cant credit people who snd me a link to a picture from ID software

PLEASE DO READ before just pressing “reply”

I am not going to repeat to you same as before with your posts “unconcous”

please read original post please.

Once again, there is really no need for you to get all defensive. If it’s not hosted on Id Software/Rome.ro or other officially affiliated sites – then believe it or not, it does take effort to find it.

You also have to get copyright permission to host these images on your site – although I’d doubt it’d be much of a problem with id, as they seem pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

It is probably okay if you don tmake money out of it and do not have it as a secret site , and you credit ID and those guys.
If your promoting something hyou like and not the site or yourself i dont see why that should be any issue.

being a fan is a true reality and people do vulanteery job for something their liked how should this be different?

do you see people go arround working for causes becauseof the money ? YES
but i am even notgoing to gain anything much out of this.

As someone who has run and operated fan-sites the trick is to put a decent legal statement re. all IP being copyright to its respective owners, and so forth. As for credit, if someone contributes to the content of your site, even if they’re just finding it for you, you should thank them in some way, be it a ‘thanks page’ with a list of names, or individually as content is added. Never underestimate the goodwill this generates, and thus the added and ongoing effort others will offer you if they feel they are appreciated.

I currently run a small Rammstein fan site. I have a legal disclaimer on the sidebar on every page, and in each post where someone else has found something I’ve linked or embedded I thank them.

Also make a point of always hosting content locally, if you can, i.e. if you embed an image in your page host it locally and use it to link to the original source, with credit where appropriate.

Of course this only applies if you do pick this up again.

You host a Rammstein site? I never knew that. I had known of your skinning work for a while now – back from the Planetdoom days, but I honestly had no idea that you were fond of Rammstein!

And just in case you were wondering ChiQ – I haven’t abandoned my site. I have been incredibly busy as of late – and sleeping tablets completely kill motivation. I’m hoping to get something up for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and take on some more staff some point this week.

I sort of didnt get much more info out of the romero.. but i got some nice answers in the forum here….

i kind of would need some awesome info from you guys and then i could make a simple site for doom.. then have sections ofr wolfenstein and so on..
specially dedicated to showing special information on the games that you could not find on the box
for sake of history people could go back and see that the excellent works were not accidental , they were thought out…

doom has so much GOING ON FOR IT that even games today do not fully use .. and barely started to use.. when you just start brushing up on what they thought about back then you see they went to great detail .. no other game after that had those artistic passion that doom had..
in same way wolfenstein could have been a marvel..
knowing what the devs went through and how the 2d sidescrolling idea had to and came about to transform into this 3d era and ideology of why not putt the player in control .. and so on.

I had no idea as you can see in the doom “boost” lol post i made asking john about doom .. i had no idea all those ideas were actually meant to happen , all the great things in doom were in otherwords not accidental like many of todays games are a bit accidental.

I am still firm believer in that what made doom great was not the blood , the gore and blasfemy but it was the coming tog-heater of solid principals and details to fuse into this realism that today feel almost accidental in many games.. and some games completely left out..
reading the post i made and the great answers john gave you realize just in those few informational posts how they actually did decide weather this or that would happen or be present in doom.

I still till this day claim doom1 has not been surpassed as a game with the package .. you can find games that have individual greatness and peaces of greatness but doom had it all in one package even if it was just a minuscule game compared to todays technology.. if you were to repeat that package today with our technology you would have the single best fps or maybe game in history of man.
Something honestly only game that came close to fulfilling was quake 3 but quake 3 was great as a limited multiplayer game.. it was great because the package required not so much and it was form ID.. even id in my respect have not been able to top their own effort of DOOM.

Now some people will say well we have this and that today but none of the games contain it all and also there is no excuse because doom did something so well when the technology was in its infancy .. many celebrated games of today outright reek of over hype and reasonless cult following that which many UNCELEBRATED games before it was quite similar
To give an example is the game “damnation” or i dont remember its exact name but the game was exact same as gears of war and uses obviously even same engine and in my opinion had a lot more to offer you had platforming also! however it went down as one of hte worst games and had no reason to think gears of war was better even if we accept that geras of war had small graphical enhancements .. but all you could do was duck cover and shoot .. this is a disgrace to our technology and nothing compared to the work of older artists who really WERE using the art and art of gaming.

Lets just say todays games contain art they are NOT ART .. they are just mishmash and poorly executed ideas into a graphical engine , while htey have great coders and graphical artists but where are hte geniuses who thought for over 30 years ago that gaming should be funn and addicting? where are they? … a simple duck and cover and shoot WILL NOT DO IT FOR ME SIR! no sir!
SHAME ON the millions of dollars they might use to make such games.. and claim they are GOLD standard.
