Post DOOM artwork/sketches

Hi guys,Hi john

I am looking for concept sketches of the monsters or artwork which Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud made during DOOM and DOOM2 development?

In the Book of id you can see Adrians sketches from the Baron of Hell, the Cyberdemon and the Archvile + several other drawings.

I really love those stuff and ask me if Adrian has made sketches of all demons and zombies?
Were the latex models which greg punchatz created, based on sketches from Adrian or Kevin?
I would love to see some sketches of the Spider Mastermind, the Mancubus or the Revenant if they existing?

I thought about it to send Adrian Carmack a mail and ask him, but I don’t think I will get an answer.

John? happy

Happy new year!

Some are direct from John’s Photo Section.

John could you please answer my questions about the sketches?
Thx

I am going to make a new forum where i try to ask some questions about doom
some small questions BUT

first of all! I have to say!

DOOM ,altough horrific and i shouldnt have played it
(its really unpleasant inasane game)
IS really a master piece putt togheter by master artists there is no doubt about it.

Doom was more gritty , detailed , high quality even high deffinition , excellent unparalleled audio immence world and really matching themes both in the monsters and the world.

The quesiton is why did they go so WRONG with doom 3 and the new concept of doom is like someone made vague scetches of original doom and started painting them black then putting them in very limited space adding very stiff, dull and incomplete gaming mechanics capitalizing on graphics and some weak shadow elements . (lets no forget how lame the huge use of resources were just to runn it)

why :
- after 20 years you make a game with less levels , tighter and limited levels
you meet like 2 4 monsters now and then it does nothing to the game for the good. There is a bigger importance to make a game not a showcase as if you were inside a zoo and out.
- WHY change the excellent theme and monsters? if you ask me altough i am ebing unfair but i really want to say lazyness, because everything is just a black . The zombie soldeirs are just so wierd that you do not realize they look like anything of the original doom.
- WHY there is no metal music ? why is there no atmopshere ?
- WHY this is a complaint on all ID gameds , why have their removed tha CAMERA HEAD . cam head is so awesome ! it makes it a retro experience of being in a suite.

I guess what i am saying is , is that i would not have been dissapointed if they had kept doom 3 simple use some higher technology (then doom 1) and remake all those BIG levels bring back that same “hell-ish” levels , use original greek crhistian/romanic extremisst horror .
WHO IN THE WORLD had the idea to change borron of hell for instnace into a black clay goo on feet ,WHAT .. it is as if someone would take hamburger out of mcdonnalds and sell hot dogs instead everytime someone asks for a burger.
Hellbarron is hellbarron you cannot just take one thing and call it something else just because it is a remake.

Well i’m no Romero, but I can answer this a little bit…

I don’t know of any sketches of DOOM, only DOOM 3.
Some of the enemies were made out of 3d models I think, such as the Spider Mastermind. The enemies that I think were in the game from start to finish, were the Hell Baron, Imp, Demon (they appear in the first Alpha)and later on the Lost Soul. If you look at the files of these Alphas/Betas, you will see early version of those enemies. they started out looking like the way they do now, but over the period of time they worked on Doom until it was released, the graphics improved. You can also see some concept of weapons, The start of the Doom shotgun, and much more. I’d read the “Doom Bible” which can be found at Doomworld as a download PDF. IT tells you a lot about concept. You can see in the betas/alphas, early artwork, so this is what you can look for.

also, I know this question was asked last year, but I try to answer it, so it’s not asked again I guess.

Yeah i was thinking about htat book .. i did neve read it..
I would probably love it!

If it really contains much of my questions then it would be the perfect book for any game developer looking into making atmospheric fps games.

you know even new games abandon some of the awesome ideas of doom which are to be found mostly in doom 1 2 still today only.

i cant think of any games brushing against doom 1 and 2 .. even heretic or hexen were a bit more enclosed but very close but not quite ..

Doom 1 and 2 is till this day to me the only LARGE SCALE fps games.. meaning its HUGE and LOOONG.. atleast for its days and technology it sure gives you the impression that your on another PLANET not just in a building or two.

do you guys agree that finishing doom 1 and 2 was almost like being in and out of A BIG HARD gaming ordeal and you were satisfied..
it was truly challenging on many planes.. and it did really scare me .. i remember some levels really made me question if i wanted to reply it after i died but not in a annoying way

Agreed, I really didn’t think Doom 3 was heading in the right direction gameplay-wise, although the visuals were pretty stunning. It was too dark, too slow and too repetitive. Everything was too scripted, nothing was random, which killed the replay value. The joy of Doom is that every single game plays out differently and it often degenerates into mayhem. This never happens with Doom 3. I don’t like it when the classic monsters are messed with; I am pretty focused when it comes to what I want from a game. Re-vamped versions of the original monsters would be amazing as long as you can recognise them.
